A design protects the external appearance of a product or part of it — in particular its lines, contours, colours, shape, texture or material.
How does it work?
Appearance, not the technical solution
A design does not protect a technical solution — that is what patents are for. It protects the aesthetic appearance of the product.
Protection lasts five years from the filing of the application and can be renewed repeatedly, up to a total of 25 years.
In the EU you can rely both on a registered Community design (RCD at the EUIPO) and on the more limited protection an unregistered design gives against deliberate copying.
