An industrial design protects the external appearance of a product or part of it, in particular the lines, contours, colors, shape, structure or material of the product.

How Does It Work?

It is not about protecting the technical solution (that is the area of patents), but the aesthetic appearance of the product.

Protection lasts 5 years from the filing of the application and can be repeatedly extended up to a total of 25 years.

In the EU, both a registered industrial design (RCD at EUIPO) and limited protection of an unregistered design against intentional copying can be used.
